ASSOCIATE DEAN

 

Position Purpose: The Wayne State University Library System seeks a dynamic
individual with a strong commitment to customer service and outstanding
leadership and managerial skills to help define, articulate, plan and
promote services in all areas of the five Wayne State University libraries
by exploring and implementing appropriate technology and access modes.
Reporting to the Dean of the University Library System and as a key member
of the Dean's Senior Management Team, the Associate Dean will work closely
with all library service groups to advance the library system toward
fulfillment of its strategic directions and to promote the libraries' role
as a valued campus partner in the teaching, learning and research
enterprise.

 

Essential Functions: Provide senior level leadership and oversight for
library operations; lead the development of excellence in customer service
and process improvement; work with all parts of the Library System to
translate the library vision and mission through development of innovative
approaches to library services based on sound data and judgment and that
meet the needs of customers; lead library marketing and public relations;
coordinate external programs and outreach to the urban community; provide
senior level oversight to the University Library System's assessment
program; lead library system efforts with development of the freshman year
experience; assist with strategic planning and the annual planning
processes, including the formulation of system wide and departmental goals
and objectives and associated policies and procedures; participate in
strategic and programmatic budgetary planning, grant writing and fundraising
efforts; support the Dean in interacting productively with the University
Administration and campus support units to advance the library system's role
in achieving the University's urban mission; and assist in defining and
articulating the library system's role in teaching and learning.

 

Qualifications: Masters' degree in Library and Information Science from an
ALA accredited library school; able to qualify as a Librarian IV rank (the
highest librarian rank) at Wayne State University; at least five years of
increasingly responsible experience in a library environment, including at
least three years in an academic library administrative capacity; excellent
interpersonal, communication and listening skills; track record of
innovation and strategic agility in building and leading team based
organizations; demonstrated leadership skills; track record of collaborative
problem solving and teamwork; knowledge of customer service and process
improvement principles and a record of successful application in academic
libraries; broad knowledge of University level organizations, operations and
practices; excellent analytical skills, including the ability to conduct
appropriate studies, effectively present findings and prepare grant and
contract proposals; thorough knowledge of the current trends in scholarly
communication, copyright and emerging information technologies; and record
of leadership and achievement in the library profession.

 

Preferred Qualifications:  Doctoral degree or second masters' degree is
preferred.
