Dear SULAIR Staff, Colleagues and Friends,

We have decided to place a lot more emphasis on science and engineering
librarianship here at Stanford. And we are building our first
"bookless" library, for the school of engineering, though it will go
through a semi-bookless phase for a decade or so. There is at least one
more new science library, perhaps two new ones, to be planned and built
as well. We will almost certainly re-furbish our earth/environmental
sciences library in the next decade. Throughout all of these facilities
development projects, we will build out the digital library for the
sciences as much as we possibly can. The Google Book Search project and
the work of HighWire Press will help a lot with that development. We
have an excellent Digital Library Systems and Services group, one of the
major departments of Academic Computing, a division of SULAIR; that
group is well staffed with systems designers, programmers, systems
administrators and other professional i.t. people, a team that will put
together the digital library in technical terms.

So, I am seeking a new Associate University Librarian for Science and
Engineering Libraries. It is a high level administrative job and very
much a strategic one. This level position brings some housing benefits,
mainly access to the campus housing stock and some preferential mortgage
deals. I am very interested in your views on suitable candidates for
this position. If you believe that you might qualify for this post, I
would be especially interested in hearing from you.

I am also seeking a new head for the engineering library. That position
description is attached too. I am adding a new line librarian to that
staff next month (the search has started, but I have a good local
candidate ready for it). And over the next budget year or two, I plan
on adding at least one and maybe two more librarians to that operation.
The new engineering library facility goes into design next month and we
hope will be occupied in FY09 or FY10. We have posted a copy of our
vision for the new library at
http://library.stanford.edu/about_sulair/SEQ2_library_vision.html , but
I must report that the dean of engineering has decided that he will
manage most of the space in the new Engineering Center, of which the
library will be only a part. I would very much appreciate your views on
the position and the vision as well as any nominations for the
position. As with the AUL position, I would appreciate any nominations
you might care to make, including self nominations.

These are challenging positions in an institution that I hope has the
reputation for innovation in service to teaching, learning, and research
at Stanford, but with relevance for lots of other organizations. I
would like to add a couple more strategically oriented, scientifically
grounded, and managerially expert colleagues to this wonderful staff of
librarians and information technology professionals.

If you have nominations, advice, criticism, or suggestions, please write
me.

Many thanks for considering these matters.

Cheers,

Mike
