**The Harvard College Library (HCL) is seeking a creative and visionary
leader to head the Widener Library Access Services Dept. Widener is the
flagship library at Harvard University, with a research collection of
over six million volumes in the stacks or at the Harvard Depository.
This position oversees access to that physical collection through its
six public service points and multiple support services to accommodate
Widener's community of users worldwide. This Senior Management
position works closely with a collaborative and dynamic management team
in Access Services as well as with colleagues from across HCL and the
University Library system to meet the mission and goals of the
department and of HCL. Access Services employs approximately 65 support
and professional staff, plus many student workers.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and overseeing
all areas of the department and its six Divisions that include: Billing
and Privileges; Harvard Depository Transfer; Interlibrary Loan; Serials
Services; Stacks and with direct supervision and leadership of the
Circulation Division. Annual activity includes a circulation rate of
approx 500,000 items, utilizing Aleph software; retrieval of more than
100,000 items from the Harvard Depository; re-shelving, rotating
collections, shelf-reading and stacks maintenance activities that
surpass 1 million items per year; transfer of materials from the Widener
stacks to the Harvard Depository to maintain equilibrium within the
Stacks; interlibrary loan activity that consistently ranks in the number
1 or 2 position in New England OCLC lending and utilizes ILLiad and
Ariel software extensively; individual reading rooms that support a
collection of over 170,000 reels of newspapers on microfilm, as well as
a collection of approximately 10,000 current and unbound periodicals and
hundreds of current newspapers, and the Phillips Reading Room, a
controlled reading room for non-circulating material held at HD; Serials
Services operations that receive and prepare for binding the current
serial collection in Widener Library and a privileges operation that
provides access to nearly 10,000 non-Harvard ID holders annually.
This position is accountable for strategic planning and collaboration
with colleagues across the University to solve problems, recommend
direction, or explore or implement new procedures in Access Services
management, technology and programs. This position represents HCL as
the expert in Access Services policy and advocates for strategic
planning and changes on a national and international level.
*Qualifications:*
* Graduate degree in library science or the equivalent combination
of education and experience.
* Proven professional management experience in a major library
public services setting.
* Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication and
problem solving skills.
* Demonstrated skill in managing operations, and supervising staff
in a complex organization.
* Experience with ILS software required.
* Professionally active and knowledgeable of Access Services issues,
technologies and future directions.
* Strong evidence of ability to work independently and
collaboratively in the framework of the institution's mission, and
to contribute actively to the enhancement of the institution's
goals.
