Job Title: Library Supervisor, ReCAP
Position Summary: The Princeton University Library, one of the world's
most respected research institutions, serves a diverse community of
6,600 students and 1,100 faculty members with more than 6 million
printed volumes, 5 million manuscripts, and 2 million nonprint items.
The holdings in its central library and 15 specialized libraries range
from ancient papyri and incunabula to the most advanced electronic
databases and digital collections. The Library employs a dedicated and
knowledgeable staff of more than 300 professional and support personnel,
complemented by a large student and hourly workforce. More information

Description: The Research Collections and Preservation Consortium
(ReCAP) is a library providing remote storage of the bibliographic
holdings of Columbia University, Princeton University and The New York
Public Library. It is located on the Plainsboro, NJ campus of Princeton
University. ReCAP encompasses four shelving modules with a fifth module
under construction, a 25,000 square foot processing center, and a cold
storage preservation vault. Holdings of the three partner libraries
comprise more than 6 million book volumes as well as a very broad array
of other information content formats. A courier service provides next
business day delivery of holdings to library patrons at the requesting
institution. ReCAP provides a reading room for on site research and a
range of alternative electronic document delivery options, including
Ariel. ReCAP supports the full range of inter-library lending
commitments of the partner libraries. The ReCAP Library Supervisor
provides direct supervision to four library assistants, whose duties
include fulfilling delivery requests, and other services.
Responsibilities of the Supervisor include making daily work assignments
and schedules, keeping staff motivated and cross-trained, maintaining
statistics, monitoring the accuracy of retrieval and re-shelving work,
coordinating shipping and receipt of holdings, directing the circulation
of library materials, document delivery, and management of alternative
holdings delivery options. As necessary, the Supervisor will be required
to temporarily supervise six additional staff comprising the early shift
in equivalent duties. The Supervisor assists the RECAP Executive
Director with general oversight of library operations ensuring efficient
and accurate processing of library accessions and implementation of new
services and work routines.
Position will work 11:15 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Friday.
Compensation and Benefits: Compensation will be competitive and
commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Twenty-four (24)
vacation days a year, plus eleven (11) paid holidays. Annuity program
(TIAA/CREF), group life insurance, health coverage insurance, disability
insurance, and other benefits are available.
Salary & Rank: Dependent upon qualifications and experience.
Essential Qualifications Required: Bachelors degree from an accredited
institution or an equivalent combination of relevant work and experience
in a document storage facility or in a large academic or research
library circulation or shelving department. Minimum of 2 years
professional project coordination or management and supervisory
experience in a document storage facility, large academic or research
library circulation or shelving department, or comparable setting,
including evidence of ability to successfully manage complex assignments
and meet established deadlines. Excellent interpersonal skills,
efficient organizational skills, demonstrated strong supervisory skills,
flexibility, and a strong service orientation. Ability to work
independently, to work in small-group and team environments, to work
effectively and creatively with a wide range of individuals. Excellent
written and verbal communication skills. Mastery of standard office
computing applications (MS Word and Excel, or equivalent). Ability to
lift and handle loads up to 50 lbs. Required to become certified in the
proper use of an automated lift. Strongly Preferred: Management
experience involving library remote book storage and/or document storage
operations, /or as part of a large library circulation or shelving
department .
Preferred Qualifications: Experience managing library patron services.
Good computer literacy with knowledge of microcomputer applications and
software, such as word processing and database management. Familiarity
with copyright laws and restrictions.
