I'm not asking about remote access but about whether you provide wireless access within your buildings to those who aren't students, faculty, or staff. If you do, I'd like to know: 1) Who can obtain access? 2) Can they access only the Internet or do they have access to licensed electronic resources? 3) Who is responsible for providing logon credentials to these users? The Library? Another campus unit? 4) If you provide access to licensed resources via wireless, did you need to alter any of your contract language for licensed resources to accommodate this? 5) Does wireless access work elsewhere on campus or only in library buildings? Some context: We've been unable to provide access to our wireless network to visitors and affiliated users, but we're considering doing so because many users ask for this and because we'd like to be able to free up workstations for our own users. We have the following procedures: 1) Who can obtain access? - Any visitor that has gained access to the building. (e.g., SHARES, Friends of Bobst members, guests of students/faculty/staff) 2) Can they access only the Internet or do they have access to licensed electronic resources? - Both 3) Who is responsible for providing logon credentials to these users? The Library? Another campus unit? - The Library Computing Center provides guest passwords. The password is changed weekly. The visitor must provide the Library Privileges issued pass, and members of the NYU community are not allowed the guest password. 4) If you provide access to licensed resources via wireless, did you need to alter any of your contract language for licensed resources to accommodate this? - No, we already cover that by having these resources available via the wired network to anyone with authorized access to Bobst. Because wireless is available only within Bobst, wireless users fall under the rubric of walk-ins. 5) Does wireless access work elsewhere on campus or only in library buildings? - Our network is available only in the library. Primarily, they are helping to improve the "quality of life" for patrons of the library. I am wondering if your library offers a similar program. If so, how do you make your assistants identifiable to patrons? Also, do you have a means of communicating with them while they are out in the library (e.g., Vocera, cell phones, or pagers)? One of these opportunities is an ALA-wide virtual poster session. The first of two poster sessions will debut this fall. Its focus is "Community Central." Share ways you are making your library vital in your community (any kind of community). The possibilities are almost endless-are you reaching under served populations; are you vital to local political activity; is your library a center of learning; are you visible outside the building? Demonstrate the specific purpose for your community involved and the ways that you have achieved the purpose. Photos, images, and sounds may accompany your presentation. To be considered for inclusion in the poster session, please send a proposal in the form of a summary of your library's efforts, making sure to address the following points: a. Question or problem (need not be stated as hypotheses) b. Environmental context of the question or problem (such as public libraries, academic libraries) c. Organizational context of the question or problem (internal services, outreach, community analysis, etc.) d. Approaches to address the question or problem (i.e., the specific ways the library and its staff have addressed the kinds of programs and activities mentioned in the Community Central description) e. Outcomes (details on the effects of the approaches, including data, testimonials, or other evidence of community involvement) The summary must be no longer than 3 pages, double-spaced (one or more photos or images may be included as part of the 3 pages). The deadline for submitting proposals is November 15, 2008. Approximately 25 submissions will be selected and will be available for viewing during the month of January, 2009. Please send the proposals via e-mail to Dr. John M. Budd at BuddJ at missouri.edu . A second virtual poster session will take place in the spring of 2009. Rettig's initiatives for his presidential term are about "Creating Connections" -connections among our libraries; connections between the communities we serve and those who make funding and policy decisions; connections with prospective library workers; connections with ALA members. His initiatives address three critical issues: Advocacy, Diversity, and Member Participation.
