Head of Access Services, D'Angelo Law Library

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Head of Access Services is responsible for the daily operations of all
D'Angelo Law Library access services functions including circulation desk
services, lending and return of library materials, shelving and stacks
maintenance, reserves collection processing, library entry access, and
physical space and equipment oversight.  The person in this position
successfully supervises a staff of 3 full-time clerical employees and
approximately 10 students and/or part-time employees (100 hours).  The Head
of Access Services ensures consistent and superior staff performance during
all hours of operation. 

The Head of Access Services is responsible for providing services at a high
level of patron satisfaction and delivering top quality access to
collections.  The person in this position clearly communicates and
interprets policies and makes certain that the library utilizes the best
practices to meet patron needs. The Head of Access Services frequently and
successfully interacts with Law School and University faculty, students,
staff and visiting researchers, ensuring a valued experience for each in
their use of the D'Angelo Law Library.

The Head of Access Services serves as a resource for library staff on all
D'Angelo access services matters.  The person in this position represents
D'Angelo access services on the Access Committee, at Library supervisors'
meetings and at D'Angelo Law Library supervisor and staff meetings.   The
Head of Access Services assumes a leadership role in the Library, analyzing
the effectiveness of policies and procedures and helping to set realistic
and measurable goals to advance the Library's mission. Working with the
Associate Law Librarian for Public Services, the Head of Access Services
develops, communicates, and interprets a successful vision and strategically
plans for the ongoing improvement of all services offered.  

This position is full time and works a minimum of 37.5 hours per week.
Occasional weekend and evening hours are required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required: A Bachelor's degree; a minimum of three years directly related
library experience, including significant patron service experience, prior
experience developing and implementing policies and procedures, and
experience planning and evaluating processes and services; a minimum of
one-year supervisory experience, including the responsibility for hiring,
training, evaluating and disciplining as appropriate; previous experience
directing the work of others, instructing staff in both new and  routine
procedures and policies, and coaching staff to effective performance as
individuals and as part of a team; considerable experience in employing
technology to promote efficient work; excellent written and oral
communication skills including tact in selecting the appropriate means of
communication; must be able to exercise good judgment in all patron
interactions; must demonstrate the ability to remain poised, diplomatic and
courteous when dealing with faculty, students, staff and visitors; excellent
organizational and planning skills; excellent analytical skills with the
ability to evaluate statistical and observational data, identify trends and
make recommendations for adjustments in staffing and services; ability to
work independently and anticipate and solve problems; experience using
library computer applications and desktop Windows software; able to move and
lift heavy items up to 50 lbs; ability to establish and maintain a good
working relationship with colleagues and work effectively in a team-oriented
environment; strong public service philosophy and a commitment to continuous
improvement and innovation.

Preferred: Academic library experience; law library experience; knowledge of
HTML and web-authoring tools; and experience using Microsoft Access and
creating database-generated reports.
