I strongly recommend this opportunity. Last year I participated in the Chicago Silk Road Project. One of the consortium partners and leaders was the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO). As a result, Juarez School Learning Community was exposed to many resources in the Chicago Metro area and most specifically the CSO. Librarians can benefit by getting involved and becoming a resource to our CPS schools.

Subject: June 4 event for high school teachers
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Albany Park Theater Project are seeking Chicago Public High School teachers of World History, Social Sciences, Humanities, Spanish/Languages, English, Music, Drama and teachers of any discipline, as well as after-school program coordinators, who are interested in exploring the ideas of genocide, freedom of speech, and transmissions of history with their students next year.
In February 2008 the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will be performing Mr. Golijov's chamber opera, Ainadamar ("Fountain of Tears"). Set during the Spanish Civil War, Ainadamar tells the story of three real-life characters including Spanish poet-playwright Federico Garcia Lorca. The work offers the opportunity to explore concepts of exile, political silencing, memory and transmission of memory across cultural boundaries. The music layers contemporary symphonic composition with the sounds of flamenco, rumba, and Spanish folk rhythms.
The Albany Park Theater Project (APTP) is a multiethnic, ensemble-based theater company of teens and young adults. APTP creates original performance works based on real-life stories collected from people living in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood. APTP is currently working on a multi-year performance project that shares the life experiences of genocide survivors. During 2007, APTP will premiere performances based on oral histories collected by its teen artist-ethnographers from survivors of the Khmer Rouge killing fields in Cambodia. In conjunction with its theatrical performances, APTP will host speakers, panel discussions, film screenings, art exhibits, and cultural events to further educate people about genocide, to introduce them to the cultures of people threatened by genocide, and to inspire new grassroots efforts-especially student-led efforts-to combat the current genocide in Darfur and to prevent future genocides.
The collaboration between the CSO and APTP aspires to help youth to develop a visceral sense of the connection between what is far away and what is nearby, between history and the present, between people who live on the other side of the world and people who live across the street. Both organizations have a vision to expand this connection to the broader Chicago community, and would like to involve high school students and teachers in the project, which will include classroom workshops with musicians, composers and artists, the opportunity to hear Ainadamar performed live at Symphony Center and to see performances by and work with members of the Albany Park Theater Project.
* Your input is desired to help shape the format of this program. Interested teachers are invited to attend a special brainstorming session with CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Osvaldo Golijov and Albany Park Theater Project Director David Feiner.
* The brainstorming session will take place on Monday, June 4 from 6:30 - 7:30pm at the Harris Theater, located at 205 E. Randolph Street. Refreshments will be served. Teachers who attend are invited to stay for a performance of Mr. Golijov's work, Ayre at 8:00pm.
* Please respond by Friday, June 1 to indicate your availability to attend the brainstorming session. If you can't attend the brainstorming session on June 4 but are interested in learning more about this program, please let us know. In addition, please feel free to pass this invitation on to colleagues who may be interested in participating in this program.
