Dear Librarians:

 

This is a reminder that the November Virtual Librarian Learning
Community meeting will take place in Second Life on Monday, November
19th from 8pm - 9pm at the Dept of Libraries virtual office.  This
month, we will be discussing the new American Association of School
Librarians (AASL) standard #1 "Learners use skills, resources, and tools
to inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge."  (download the

m) We will react to the standard and discuss ways we can apply it in our
library programs.  There has been significant interest from persons in
AASL and ISTE in attending our meetings, so this may be an opportunity
to network more broadly with other librarians.

 

To attend the event:

-          log on at approximately 7:45 pm

-          search for Elaine Tulip and instant message for a teleport to
our meeting location

-          if you are new to Second Life, create your account and
practice well in advance of this meeting.

 

To create an account:

-          Go to www.secondlife.com <http://www.secondlife.com/> 

-          Click on the orange button to create your free account

-          Download the client software from the link on the lower left
corner of the homepage

-          On a high-speed Internet connection and computer with meeting
minimum systems requirements
(http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php) start the software
interface and log on using your avatar name and password

-          Watch your avatar "be born"

-          Complete basic orientation activities provided to learn how
to move and communicate

-          Plan to practice these skills for several hours before
attending any event to develop a beginning comfort level.  Search for
library and education places to explore.
