I agree with Pam. My students are all cognitively disabled; most have additional associated learning disabilities. Reading levels here are very low. My students need to have books that they have a visual and personal connection to, and the TV books (including Arthur, Goosebumps, Cheetah Girls, That's So Raven, Romeo) and movie-related books--Batman, Spiderman, Shrek, 'Pirates of the Caribbean', 'Finding Nemo', etc.-- are very popular.
I'm not sure the kids can even really read some of these books, but having them available creates a comfort-level with using the library and experiencing books. From there, with luck and time, maybe we can move on to other types of books.

Dear Natalie,
You start where the reader is, & then you encourage him/her to extend reading to better quality literature. In my book, there's nothing wrong with TV novels, etc.
Sincerely,

Has anyone ever built a strong collection "tv related" books in your library? Many of my k-8 students request books related to their favorite tv shows. Does anyone fill those requests? On one hand, I think kids watch too much tv, so why encourage them? On the other hand, maybe they'll watch less tv and read more if they fall in love with books, even if they start with less "developed" literature.
Thanks in advance for feedback.
