Hi Fran,
I had poetry jams at Morgan Park. We held them during student lunch periods. All poems had to be submitted in advance. The fliers clearly stated that all poems had to be free of sexually explicit or violent material and should be carefully edited regarding race and gender issues. I often served cookies and coffee or tea. I invited at least one English class during each period to insure a receptive audience. The teachers gave extra credit to students who wrote and performed their poems. It really is and excellent forum for the kids to express who they are and how they feel about their world. I hope to put on some lunch hour jams here at Brooks soon.

I know that some of you have hosted poetry cafes and poetry slams. How did you get it started?
