[CPSLibraries] Poetry Slam

We started the Juarez Coffee House three years ago. It takes place each year in April, Poetry Month. We try to host a local poet, who conducts a workshop for interested students. This event takes place early in the month. At the beginning of the year, I look for a teacher in the English Dept. who is interested in having his/her class serve as the base participants in the open mic poetry session at the Juarez Coffee House. We work together during the classroom teachers unit on poetry. He/she and I advertise the Coffee House during the month and ask for students, teachers, administrators, staff or community to share original or favorite poetry. These individuals sign up to present. Then, the last week of the month, generally on Friday, we host the event in the library.

Last year for the first time, a senior special education class participated and everyone enjoyed individual poetry and a choral reading of a poem, If I Ruled the World.

Good luck!

I know that some of you have hosted poetry cafes and poetry slams. How did you get it started?
