Dear Librarians:

Our event on Tuesday in Second Life with David Loertscher - "In Command!
Teaching Kids and Teens to Build and Manage Their Own Information Spaces
And ...Learn to Manage Themselves in Those Spaces" - was a big success.
Please visit the blog post about this event at:
http://blogs.cuip.net/dlis. David and his graduate assistant, Robin
Williams, presented innovative ideas about using free Internet sources,
such as iGoogle, to help students create personalized, collaborative
work spaces. They also spoke about an exciting new world-wide reading
challenge called Knowville. The ppt presentation and event transcript
are available from the blog for those who were unable to attend the
event.

Other upcoming events in Second Life:

1. This Friday at 8 pm, the Illinois Interlopers group will hold
their monthly networking party online in Second Life at the Jazz Cat
Lounge. This is a group of Illinois librarians and educators who meet
periodically in a virtual social setting to explore potential
collaborations. IM Elaine Tulip for a teleport to the event.

2. Next Monday, September 24 at 8 pm is our monthly Virtual
Librarian Learning Community Meeting in Second Life. Our discussion
topic this month will be "Grant Writing for the Library". The
discussion will be led by Area Library Coordinator KC Boyd (SL name:
Amarris Aabye) and me (SL name: Elaine Tulip). We will also discuss our
department's matching grant program and tips for submitting a successful
grant. IM either Amarris Aabye or Elaine Tulip for a teleport.

3. The American Library Association is hosting a series of events
in Second Life on the adult grid and the teen grid to support Banned
Book Week. See a full list of their Second Life events at:
http://www.ala.org/ala/pressreleases2007/september2007/bbwvw.htm

If you do not have an avatar account in Second Life (SL), go to
www.secondlife.com in advance. Set up your free account, download the
client reader software, and sign in after launching the reader. You
must access SL from a high-speed connection using a newer computer with
quality graphics. (See systems requirements at
http://www.secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php). Become familiar with
the basics of communicating and navigating in SL in advance.

It is recommended to arrive at the event at least 15 minutes prior to
the start time.

Thanks,

Lisa Perez, Area Library Coordinator
