Finding Oprah's Roots, Finding Your Own is a book written by Henry Louis
Gates based upon the PBS documentary, titled Oprah's Roots. Thanks to
the Mayor's Office, every Chicago Public School library serving middle
and high school students, will receive a copy of this book and the DVD
Finding Oprah's Roots, Finding Your Own.

A group of elementary and high school teachers have been working
diligently to develop a curriculum guide to accompany the book. The
curriculum guide is a series of lessons to show how teachers can use
these resources in their respective classrooms. The lesson plans are
interactive, interdisciplinary, resourceful and multicultural. Each
school will receive a copy of the curriculum guide as well. These
lessons will help students to better understand themselves and their
history; appreciate the challenges, struggles and victories of their
ancestors; and generate an interest in such topics as the movement of
peoples, geography, cultural awareness, historical inquiry, primary and
secondary source analysis, research skills and genealogy.

The FOR (Finding Oprah's Roots) Project is hosting an exciting one-day
Mini-Conference primarily for librarians, social science and language
arts teachers; however ALL teachers are welcome. The teacher-curriculum
writers will conduct hands on activities to demonstrate how their
lessons may be used in the classrooms. Three (3) CPDUs will be
provided.

Mr. Tony Burroughs, the author of Black Roots, genealogist and
consultant with the FOR Project, will be our keynote speaker for the
day. The collaborating teachers will lead the break-out sessions for
both time slots. In order to prepare the materials for the participants
- YOU MUST REGISTER TO ATTEND. We cannot guarantee on-site registration
and copies of the materials.

For more information, please contact Mrs. Geralynn Marshall, FOR Project
Manager at: 773-553-4056, or gmarshall at cps.k12.il.us.

Thanks,
