Dear Collette,

There are lots of ways to order magazines but I think it's easiest
to order from a magazine subscription service. A subscription service
organizes all of your magazines into one order with one purchase order.
That makes it easier on your clerk as well. Some subscription services
include:

For many magazines, you can order just the school year so that you don't
receive magazines in the summer if you are not a year round or track E
school. It saves money so you can buy more magazines. You can also
frequently get a price reduction if you order 2 years at a time. If you
are sure your kids will love a magazine, it's a good idea if your
funding is not assured for the subsequent year. Also, ordering magazines
for a school takes a million times longer to start than ordering for
your home. It can take up to 2 months (or more) for subscriptions to
start arriving - that's why it's important to get your magazine orders
in early. After a year, a subscription service will send you one renewal
notice. You can cross off magazines that were not popular and add
magazines that you would like and send it in with a P.O. rather than
reordering everything individually.

I always found it was a good idea to order a magazine for your principal
or administrator. She or he will miss their magazine and may be more
likely to budget money for subscriptions if he or she is directly
affected. You can also order magazines for your staff, parents and
yourself, LMC, School library Journal, BookLinks, etc.

My general rule of thumb for magazine orders is 1,000 kids = $1,000 per
year for magazine subscriptions, 500 kids = $500 per year for magazine
subscriptions, etc. It's important to include magazine orders in your
library budget requests in the early spring when budget choices are
being made by your LSC.

Some popular magazine titles include:

American Girl

Ask

Biography Today

Calliope

Career World

Chicos

Current Events

Current Science

National Geographic Kids

New Moon

Sports Illustrated for Kids

Time for Kids (TFK)

Weekly Reader

ZooBooks

Good luck and happy reading!

Sincerely,

Dorsey
