Centralized School Library Automation
CPS has reached an agreement with The Library Corporation ("TLC") to
implement a centralized school library automation system for the
District. Rollout of the new system will begin with a pilot of
approximately 35 school libraries in the fall/winter of 2008. We expect
to add approximately 100 school libraries to the system each school year
over the course of five years. Centralized library automation will be
maintained and supported at the District level rather than on
school-based stand alone servers.
TLC's Library.Solution will provide CPS libraries with automated
circulation, an online catalog of the books and resources in our
libraries, and online searching that will include selected web resources
and library subscription databases. The catalog will include enhanced
content such as images of book jackets, book reviews, and descriptive
summaries and tables of contents of our library books. Students and
teachers will have the ability to review books for other readers as well
as create and share reading and research lists of resources. Students,
teachers and parents will have access to the catalog over the Internet
from home or school.
TLC also provides the library automation system for the Chicago Public
Library, which can be viewed at http://www.chipublib.org/.
A majority of the funding for the new system will be provided by the
District, with no cost to the school during the first two years of the
school's implementation. Related costs to the schools could include
acquiring a bar code scanner and Internet-accessible computers that meet
CPS standards, if not currently available at the school. Schools will
pay reduced ongoing support and maintenance costs after the first two
years of implementation at their location.
Schools that have not done so should complete the library automation
interest survey available at the Department of Libraries web site at
http://www.cps.k12.il.us/aboutcps/departments/libraries/21st.shtml
For more information contact your school's area library coordinator in
the Department of Libraries and Information Services at 773.553.6210.
