[CPSLibraries] Family literacy night

We just held our FLN this week. It’s our fifth year and one of the favorite
family events – half of our students come consistently.

Ours is very simple and relatively easy to organize. I invite teachers,
parents and our CPL children’s library to read. We have recently added
student performances. The response has always been good. No teacher is
forced, just asked. And the event is only 1 ½ hours.

We start the program together in the gym. Readers do 15-30 second
commercials about their story. Families choose three stories to hear, each
taking place in separate classrooms. There are three 15-minute rotations.
This means that each reader/ storyteller/ performer does their story three
times in the same place and families rotate to different classrooms.

Students have passports that get stamped at each story. With each full
passport, students can get a free book at the end of the night. We also
have cookies and milk together in the gym. The PTO donates these items.

We also wear pj’s. And we have a cheesy mascot named Mr. Moon who visits
classrooms to do PR and then comes to visit that night. He’s a huge hit.

Subject: [CPSLibraries] Family literacy night

Dear Elementary Librarians,

Has anyone been involved in a family literacy night? Our administration has
decided to have one after school in February and I've never seen one.

I would like ideas for making this exciting to the students and families and
NOT burensome to our teachers.

Thanks,
