Dear CPS Librarians:
Here is information about April events in Second Life for the AASL-ISTE
SIGMS virtual learning community:
1. On Wed, April 15 at 8pm ET/7pm CT/6pm MT/5pm PT, we will hold
the monthly orientation meeting for newcomers. If you would like to
gain some comfort in SL in a non-threatening, informal environment,
consider attending this meeting. We will be at

set up an account, see

2. On Tues, April 21 at 8pm ET/7pm CT/6pm MT/5pm PT, we will hold
our month virtual learning community meeting. This month's meeting will
be facilitated by Will Richardson of the well-known edublog Weblogged
(http://weblogg-ed.com <http://weblogg-ed.com/> ). Will is an
internationally recognized leader in educational technology. His topic
will be "Googled Well: Helping Kids Lead Transparent Lives". We will
be on the ALA Main Stage at
http://slurl.com/secondlife/ALA%20Island/127/102/29
<http://slurl.com/secondlife/ALA%20Island/127/102/29> .
Here's a quote from Will's blog:
It's pretty obvious to me that my own kids are going to be living much
more transparent lives than most of their teachers would be comfortable
with. I've written and spoken ad nauseum of the need for them to be
"Googled well", and I've been thinking a lot lately about a parent's
responsibility to start that process for them. I really do believe that
in this moment, however, that schools also have a responsibility to help
kids lead transparent lives online in ways that prepare them for the
highly complex relationships they will be having in these virtual spaces
as adults. But to do that, schools have to get more transparent
themselves. (http://weblogg-ed.com/2009/leadership-transparency)
Will is the author of the book "Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other
Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms - 2nd Ed" (Corwin Press). He is on
the National Advisory Board of the George Lucas Foundation, a frequent
columnist in "District Administration" magazine, and an international
speaker on topics related to technology integration. Join our
conversation about this important topic to our students in a day when
posts to the Internet can have consequences for years to come and when
it is at least as important to document the learning process as the
final outcome.
See you in-world!
