Dear CPS Librarians:

We have two meetings of the AASL-ISTE SIGMS-CPS virtual learning
community in Second Life scheduled for January. On Tuesday, January 13
at 7 PM, we will hold our informal monthly orientation meeting for those
new to Second Life. We will meet on the main stage of the ALA Island at
http://slurl.com/secondlife/ALA%20Island/127/101/29. For information
about logging into Second Life, see
http://blogs.cuip.net/dlis/attend-our-librarian-meetings.

Our monthly learning community meeting will be held on Tuesday, January
20 at 7pm PT at the ALA Island. This month's guest facilitator is
Michael Eisenberg.

The Crisis Facing School Libraries and Librarians

We see continuing cuts in librarian positions as well as funding for
school libraries. Our field continues to slowly (and in some places not
so slowly) lose ground. This is true in spite of this being the
"information age" with the role of school library programs and
teacher-librarians in learning and teaching being more important than
ever. It's true in spite of teacher-librarians being better trained and
more engaged in the use of technology, information skills instruction,
and collaboration with classroom teachers. It's true in spite of better
research on the impact of school libraries, new standards, and plenty of
writing and presentations about the field in print, online, and
face-to-face.

Mike Eisenberg, well-known library educator, wants to face this crisis
head-on. In this interactive session, Mike starts with a discussion of
"why" and then moves to "what" we can do about it beginning right now -
as individuals and collectively.
